Stop Burn Injuries (SBI)
The SBI program provides burn education to school children from kindergarten to grade five. It is designed to make children aware of the hazards that can cause minor to severe burns. The program is offered to all schools in Saskatchewan including those on First Nation Reserves and Hutterite Colonies. This service is provided regardless of the ability to pay.
In 1956 Shriners International opened the first hospital dedicated to burn injuries, with three more to follow shortly. With finances in place lots of research and highly training doctors the Shrine became leaders in the field of burn treatment.
From this evolved the education of children and thus the formation of SBI programs at many temples throughout North America. This education varies from temple to temple, but has the same goal and that is to prevent burns to children in their early years.
WA WA Shriners started this program approximately 25 years ago with some start up assistance from Khartum Shriners.
We provide education on how not to get burned to children from kindergarten to grade five. This training is provided free of charge to communities that have volunteer fire departments as they do not in many cases have funding for material s and many of the firefighters have full time employment. Areas that have paid fire departments have a budget for this type of education.

burn care at shriners hospitals for children
Forty years after opening its first Shriners Hospital, the Shrine of North America became aware of another enemy of children ----- the severe burn, Each year , thousands of children are disfigured or killed by what has been called one of the greatest hazards of childhood.
Recognizing the lack of medical expertise in the burn care field, in the mid-1960 the Shrine opened three Shriners Hospitals specifically to treat burns, each with the three-fold purpose of helping children, conduction burn research and training medical personnel in the treatment of burn injuries. Today, four Shriners Hospitals provide acute and rehabilitative care for children who have been burned.
The burn Shriners Hospitals are located in Boston, Cincinnati, Galveston, Texas and Sacramento, Calf. Since the mid-1960s, when the Shrine first made a commitment to advancing burn treatment by opening these specialized hospitals, a burned child's chance of survival has more than doubled. <Read More>

Parents, teachers, guardians, and even babysitters are all people who are routinely responsible for the care and well-being of children. Because both infants and children are not capable of making the decisions and taking the actions necessary to keep themselves safe, they are dependent on the knowledge and efforts of those who care for them.
At any point during the day, a child is faced with potential threats from the things around him or her. From the food that they eat to the water that they bathe in, the risk of injury and even death is something that people should always take seriously. Although some adults may instinctively know how to keep children safe in some instances, they all must learn how to do it in every situation. <Read More>
